Response to round four of the Joint Local Transport Plan consultation
The problems we’re facing locally are huge, and there is a significant challenge to ensure that our area’s transport system is more sustainable in the future.
Current levels of air pollution are already above legal limits in some cases, and plans for new homes outside our current towns and cities can only make this worse. Congestion is a huge issue bringing both health and economic costs. Plus, families who have no access to a car can struggle to access services and amenities locally. Unfortunately, we seriously question whether the measures proposed in the Plan will deliver results, such as improved air quality, less congestion, and a truly effective public transport system. Proposals for new roads, for example, represent high environmental cost for potentially very short term benefit, as new roads quickly get filled up with more cars.
