New Trustees up for election: Georgie Bigg
Georgie Bigg grew up in London and had a successful career in banking, this provided opportunities to work with a wide range of professionals, businesses, communities and volunteers.
A personal interest in the environment and health grew from a childhood of cycling out of London to the Kent countryside to escape an increasingly urbanised South London. Eventually, the West Country beckoned and Georgie moved to Wrington in North Somerset.
Georgie has been involved with CPRE Avonside and then Avon and Bristol as a campaigner, specialising in planning, for over 25 years. She has played a crucial part in campaigns including against Bristol Airport expansion; the South Bristol Ring Road; influencing local planners to put pylons underground and on the changes brought about by the Regional Spatial Strategy.
She was elected as a Member of the National Board of CPRE in 2007, serving for six years. Here she gained insight into the workings of national politics and the importance of CPRE as an influencer in protecting the countryside. During this time she was Vice-Chair and then Chair of the Nominations Committee and a member of the Policy Committee.
Chairing the Supporter Review Group and working with the staff team, helped deliver 10,500 new members. Georgie went on to help develop the 2020 Vision for CPRE, visiting local groups nationwide to hear members’ views.
Georgie is currently a Parish Councillor, Chair of Healthwatch Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire and a Trustee of the West of England Rural Network.
“I believe we need a long-term Land Use plan that delivers housing and infrastructure that enhances the environment and improves the wellbeing of individuals and communities. Having seen the latest national proposals for Planning Policy I would like to become a Trustee of CPRE Avon and Bristol and use my experience and knowledge to support the enormous challenges we face for our countryside”.
