Hedgerow Heroes are back for a second year!
Our Hedgerow Heroes project has been running for over a year now. Our team have been out planting and coppicing in all weathers working hard to improve hedgerows and protect wildlife throughout South Gloucestershire. In that time we were able lay 350m hedgerow and gap up 800m of existing hedgerow! Helping those important wildlife corridors thrive.
Following the success of the last year, we will be expanding into Bath and Northeast Somerset to revitalise hedgerows and improve the landscape across both counties.
Our Goals for the coming year
We are aiming to improve 1km hedgerow over winter, to prevent soil erosion and provide a habitat for many species of birds, insects, butterflies and small mammals. To achieve this, we aim to:
1. Train a whole team of new volunteers in hedge laying and planting.
2. Work with Bath & NE Somerset council and South Gloucestershire council to develop a more wildlife friendly method of hedgerow management.
3. Spread the word of how to make hedgerows healthier and inspire everyone who has a hedgerow. Forget annually trimmed, neat boxy hedgerows lining every field or garden, we want to see more sprawling dense hedgerows, brimming with blossoms and berries!
