Hedgerows are the vital stitching in the patchwork of our countryside. Not only are they beautiful, with shifting seasonal colours, but they also provide homes and corridors for wildlife. And all the while they help tackle the climate crisis by capturing carbon.
Sadly our hedgerows have been in decline since the second world war. Around half have been ripped out of the landscape and the majority of the rest have been aggressively managed through machine flailing. Our hedgerows need our help.
Our Hedgerow Heroes project will rescue 118km of hedgerows in South Gloucestershire from irreversible decline.
We are teaming up with South Gloucestershire Council to restore 118km of hedgerows alongside footpaths in the countryside so they can thrive. South Gloucestershire have recognised that the hedgerows under their management are suffering due to the use of efficient but damaging machine flailing. We’re delighted to work with them to find a new way to give their hedgerows the TLC they need.
Starting in June we will:
- Recruit and train a team of volunteer Hedgerow Heroes who will learn how to look after hedgerows and put their new skills to work out in the countryside.
- Support Parish Councils to better manage their hedgerows as part of their Local Nature Area Plans
- Engage the public to explain the benefits and importance of the changed management regime
If you would like to be involved in this project as a Hedgerow Hero volunteer, a Parish Council or to support the project administration, please let us know by emailing us:
We are currently recruiting for a Hedgerow Heroes Office to lead the project. Find out more here.
